Voice of the Ocean
A film about something we cannot see. The systems beneath the surface that quietly hold up the world above it. The weather we trust. The food we land. The storms we see coming. Almost no one thinks about them, and that is exactly the problem. How do you make an invisible system feel essential? Make it physical. Get close. Real life and real instruments, shot for real, so the viewer feels what is at stake before they are told. Honest, calm, and a little unsettling. Beautiful, but never comfortable.
We gave ourselves one rule: nothing above the surface. No waves, no horizon, not a single frame that comes up for air. The film starts inside one drop of seawater and pulls back one scale at a time, losing resolution the way the world does when it stops paying attention. The drop was shot at Science into Images outside Barcelona, where Rubén and Iker Duro sampled the water, isolated the organisms and told us which species could carry a film. We sat at their Olympus microscopes and filmed what they served us. Plankton do not take direction. We waited. The open water is an ocean basin in Trondheim, Cinemarine on the underwater camera, a real autonomous vehicle playing itself.
