TYD is Ole Jørgen Larssen and Andreas Børsting Røe. Two directors from Trondheim who still do most of it themselves.

What the name stands for is between the two of us. We're both past forty now, so lately we've taken to saying it's The Young Directors. Or Trust Your Directors, depending on the day.

We grew up in the same town and went to the same schools, mostly sizing each other up from across the room. Too alike to be friends, probably. Then mutual friends put us together after school, and we haven't worked apart since. We started TYD in 2012. People on set ask if we always argue this much. We don't think of it as arguing. By now it's an old married couple that happens to make films.

Trondheim is a small city in a small country, and when we started there was almost no film scene here. No gaffers, no best boys, no camera assistants, barely a rental house. So we learned all of it ourselves, out of necessity. We still direct, shoot, cut and colour a lot of our own work. For most of our first decade the only things we handed off were sound and music.

It left us with a way of working we can't shake. We like things real and we don't force them. Everything you see in our films happened in front of the lens. We plan more than we used to, storyboard when it helps, but we build the day so it can breathe, so a real moment has somewhere to land. Not the carefully planned bot-and-dolly shots that make every film look like every other film. Imperfect, in the right way.

The work that carried us past Norway was a run of films for Speilsalen at Britannia. People don't believe we did those ourselves. Mostly we did. Somewhere in that job we found our own way to shoot food, and the reason it works is simple: you can feel that what you're watching is real.

We want the next film to be better than the last one. Time and money have never been allowed to decide how good a thing gets.
