Christmas is remembered in the hands before the head. So there are no faces in this film, and no one says a word. A grandmother's hand and a child's move differently, and the camera reads the difference. A ribbon tied, a roast carved, a music box wound, all of it scored to a reworked Sugar Plum Fairy. The kitchen becomes a stage.
Behind the scenes
Two days in Vilnius, one in a studio and one on location. We cast the hands the way you'd normally cast faces: over a hundred and fifty pairs to look through, with one rule we set ourselves, we asked never to see the faces they belonged to. All of it shot in early September, which is a peculiar time of year to be filming Christmas.
